"In Brazil, more than half of the population identifies as black, and just like everywhere else in the world, black people face a profound reality of social, economic, and cultural barriers.

Back in 2002, when I used to attend many black music parties, I noticed that the owners of these parties were white. That's when I understood the urgency of having an attraction made by blacks for blacks that would make money circulate in the hands of the black population. So, I created Feira Preta, an event that brought together black entertainment and entrepreneurship.

An event that started in a small square, facing the racism from the white people in the region where it took place, is now the largest festival of black culture, entertainment, and entrepreneurship in Latin America, bringing together 60 thousand people, with over 100 attractions, and putting money in the hands of different agents of the Brazilian black creative economy."

Feira Preta is a strategic ecosystem focused on the economic and cultural strengthening of the black population in Latin America, particularly in Brazil. We are a social organization and impact business that systemically works with different programs, projects, and actions, creating an environment conducive to the empowerment, growth, and economic sustainability of black people based on the recovery of knowledge that contributes to the reconstruction of imaginaries and the construction of new futures.

Feira Preta operates on different fronts that, together, consolidate and enhance our impact:

STRENGTHENING CULTURAL IDENTITY AND BUILDING NEW NARRATIVES FOR THE BLACK POPULATION

Through initiatives to value, promote, and disseminate black identity and creativity, we create and recreate memories, narratives, and imaginaries, placing the ancestral, intellectual, cultural, social, and economic contributions of black people at the center. We strengthen racial pride and self-esteem in the black community while challenging and changing harmful and prejudiced stereotypes about our people.

ENTREPENEURIAL EDUCATION

We provide technical, creative, and emotional training to different participants in this ecosystem, especially black entrepreneurs, to strengthen the black creative economy. We do that by offering them the tools, skills, and knowledge they need to develop strong, innovative, and sustainable businesses and initiatives. We also foster emerging economies by promoting the introduction of black companies in the digital environment, expanding their reach and productivity.

DATA PRODUCTION TO INFLUENCE AND INFORM PUBLIC POLICIES

We collect, analyze, and disseminate data that portray the economic behavior of the black population, the creative economy, and consumption trends regarding their existence in Brazil and other Latin American countries. We also act as an agent of political influence, actively participating in the public policy formation that promotes racial equality and supports the black creative economy. Thus, we offer an information-solid base that supports strategic decision-making for entrepreneurs and allies, partners, investors, and formulators of laws and public policies.

ACCESS TO CREDIT

We facilitate access to credit and financial resources for entrepreneurs and other actors in the black creative economy, often excluded from traditional financing and philanthropy channels. We aim to increase the number of black businesses and organizations financed, and equipped to accelerate and scale.

ACCESS TO MARKETS

We create opportunities for exposure and marketing for products and services from black entrepreneurs on recognized and high-impact offline and online platforms.

Feira Preta's initiatives are orchestrated, jointed, systemic, and structural so we can reach the impact we work for. Learn more about them:

Founder and Executive Director of Feira Preta, Adriana Barbosa holds a degree in Event Management with a Specialization in Cultural Management from the Center for Latin American Studies on Culture and Communication at ECA – USP.

Twenty years ago, Adriana realized that while the Brazilian economy was developing, so was the power of "Black Money" in Brazil, which is the money generated by Black people and circulated among them. She then invested in an idea that was quite obvious but had not yet been properly explored: an economic and cultural enterprise with an ethnic focus.

Through her work with Feira Preta, Adriana gained national and international recognition and received the following awards and honors:

  • MIPAD - 2017: Named one of the 51 most influential Black people under 40 in the world.
  • WORLD ECONOMIC FORUM - 2020: First Black woman among the World’s Social Innovators of the Year.
  • BLOOMBERG LINEA - 2022/23/24: Recognized as one of the 500 most influential people in Latin America by Bloomberg Linea.
